Crazy Girl

We had been married for almost 3 months, and had only been on 1 short date alone. I was a nursing mom whose baby was just starting to make progress taking her milk from a bottle. We were completely in love with her and had as much seperation anxiety as she did on the rare occasions we'd even make a trip to the grocery store without her.

We found out the Eli Young Band was giving a free concert about an hour away. They weren't really popular yet with the everyday public, but they were our favorite band. Though we had claimed several songs by now, they sang Crazy Girl, which had become the one that meant the most to us, and so it was the one we chose to dance our 1st dance to at our wedding. Coupled with the fact that money was so tight having only 1 income, and the event being free, we knew we had to go.

His mom agreed to babysit. It was so strange being away from her, but we knew she was in good hands and we could head back immediately if she got too fussy. We were slightly disappointed to find the free section was on the grass. I was excited regardless. After all, what were the chances our band would be giving a free concert close enough for us to attend? So we couldn't see very well, I'd happily snuggle and relax on the grass with him, listening to our favorite song being played live! We'd still be able to hear the band and that's what mattered. It visibly bothered him. He really wanted the night to be perfect for me and though to me it already was, you could see on his face it saddened him.

I found myself a spot on the grass and settled in. Unfortunately we were unprepared and didn't even have a blanket because we weren't aware of the seating arrangements. It was mid July and quite hot. I remember thinking I was very thirsty but figured concessions would be ridiculously expensive and decided to hold off as long as I could. He told me to sit tight and said he'd be right back. I wasn't sure what he was doing but really didn't think too hard about it until I saw him approach an elderly gentleman wearing a staff clearance lanyard around his neck.

He soon returned with a huge smile on his face. He took my hands and pulled me to my feet. "Come on," he said, as he frantically pulled me along. Obviously curious, I finally inquired about what was going on. Turns out he had somehow talked the man into letting us into the VIP seating, complete with free refreshments. It probably sounds a bit cheesy, but it was one of those moments that everything just fell into place and reinforced that fate had brought us together. It was indescribable, like something straight out of one of my girlish fantasies...except it was unmistakably real.

He eventually explained that he approached the gentleman and told him our story, along with the importance Crazy Girl had. He explained he really wanted this to be a memorable night for his new wife and asked how much it would cost to move into the seats. The man told him he had been given some extra tickets and insisted we use them. He was so touched by his sincerity he wouldn't allow him to purchase them. We had gone from barely being able to see, being thirsty, and sitting on the ground to only being a couple of rows from the stage in a comfy chair with free refreshments.

We sat there holding hands through most of the concert, until Crazy Girl came on. Then we slow danced at our seats under the stars like a couple of love struck teenagers. It was perfect. Never in my life had I experienced moments like these. Moments that touch your heart so deeply beyond anything you ever realized was possible. Never before him.

Soon his mother called. The baby didn't want to take her bottle so we rushed back home to her. Though only a few hours, I knew this had been yet another memory I would forever cherish. Another significant chapter in my own personal love story, telling me....you got it right this time.
